Title: Player problem
Post by: VSMIT on April 13, 2009, 06:34:45 PM
For anyone who hosts PB4a, there is a player who has taken to impersonating me.  If a player enters with the name "vsmit" (note, lowercase), confirm that it's me playing or be wary of what they do.

Thank you for your time.

If he's impersonating you and we ask him 'is that you?' he'll say yes, anything in particular we need to ask?

My MSN name is public, and my bzu jabber is active, so just message me and ask if I'm in game.  An easy way to tell is whether or not the person uses correct grammar.

Is he doing anything detrimental to your name? I.e. is he joining as you specifically and making a mess of things?

It could very well be that they just chose that usename of their own accord out of some random longshot coincidence, and VSMIT to you could mean something totally different to what vsmit means to this guy.

The fake-vsmit seems to be 'batts' or 'stone_cold_killa' (or the like), connecting from *.gci.net. He's been in and out of the BZ2 irc lobby for weeks, usually begging for people to host games for him. A few days ago, he started entering under other people's nicknames, as if that would give him a better response. He was warned to stop that, but he continued his misbehavior. That earned him a banning from the channel.

Great. Just what we need. More total losers to kick out of our games.

lol, had him in my game but was positive it wasnt you ....
He seemed kinda insecure about himself ..... that gave it away :D
(no offence intended btw)

edit: do note, he doesnt seem to do anything wrong to me, there are others though .... :s

I heard from another player that he acted against the team at times.  He may not do it every time, which is why I said "be wary" instead of saying, "Kickban him."

Batt's came from 1.1. I taught him a few things there. He's very quiet as a player, but never caused huge problems. I think he just wants to get accepted (which is odd because 1.3 is a MUCH more accepting community than 1.2 is).

Yeah... well... pretending to be someone else probably wont help his chances.

From what I've seen of him he is spiteful and immature.

Most people are when they percieve they are getting attacked, even if it is deserved or not. Too bad he has to learn the hard way, but such is life eh?

I was helping another player in the IRC channel, he came in and did practically all he could to annoy us.  I think that's when he started taking other names.  Didn't take mine, but the player I was helping.

Get his IP and post it here, its easilly added to GamePrefs.ini (though I'm not sure if it really works as I banned 'Zachary' from my games and he was able to join last saturday, or he had a change of IP-adress)

Yeah, that's more likely.  There are probably a bunch of players that go by Zachary.  Only one VSMIT, though.

BanIP2 = "24.31.***.**/32"  // Zachary, joins but never plays. May need to adjust the netmask to 24 bits.

Could be. I've been online quite some time the last months and I only ever see 1 Zachary though. But enlight of this copycat and the fact that ol' zach didnt use a Capital "Z" it could be the same copycat ... just more reason to get his IP. On the other hand if he joins my game using that nick it wont take me more than 5-ish seconds to type '/ban zachary' :D

Noticed this yesterday:
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/4351/bustedf.jpg

Now I cant get M3 to answer me when asking if he hosts 2 different games from 2 different PCs, but I'm than again also afraid I asked the copycat as I dont know who the real M3 is ....

Anyway, I think one of the 2 IPs is from our copycat:
-79.229.23.156 (I think this is the real M3)
-65.184.116.234 (I think this is the copycat)

Please dont block these IPs just yet, just make a note of them and if someone joins using a nick where you dont trust its the real deal just use the command /iplist (if you are the server) to double check. If you find out which of the 2 is the real copycat please let us know.

Its more likely one was a ghost game, or he ran 2 servers, or he left it open at one house and went to another. Or two people just like the name.

Only way to think something is up is to actually encounter the impostor (if he or she really is one).

I thinks it more likelly the case, as I already mentioned, that I asked the wrong M3.

edit: also see the name of the server 2 below the one selected, thats the other M3.

Whoever this impostor is, he's not very clever, wandering around when the real M3 is both at his computer and playing BZ2.

Batt's talked to me earlier and said that someone has been using HIS name. Maybe our culprit isn't really Batt's?

I've seen Batt's in 1.0 games.  I think the imposter's "normal" name is sage.  When he takes people's names, he doesn't really use punctuation or capitalization, which is almost a sure-fire way of knowing that it's not the real person.

Couldn't help look this up as I was somewhat confused about it when seeing your avatar:
QuoteMany people are surprised to learn that finding a word in the dictionary doesn't automatically mean that word is widely accepted by society. You'll find the words thru (t-h-r-u), irregardless, and ain't in many dictionaries, but that doesn't mean you should use them in your cover letters. It just means they are in wide enough use that dictionary makers believe the words must be acknowledged and defined.
So it seems it is correct to use it as substitute for 'through', but it simply ain't really accepted by the general public.
Your avatars are good for my English :)

Oh, you meant "couldn't help BUT look this up..."  ;)

I've got no dutch -- just some fun German phrases spelled wrong.

"du hast dane shunsten ash der welt" (you have the greatest ass in the world)

"ich libre dich" (i love you)

"Mien zach eut" (my balls itch)

"Buch dich" (bend down)

and then i can combine em a little bit, to make something like this:

mien zack eut viel du dane shunsten ash der welt hast.

eut mienen zack.

Leave it locked... the impersonator is sage (right?). Doesn't really matter who it is, I guess. Get the IP and ban him if you don't like him.

Not much more to say.
