If I made a new 'threed', it would probably just deal with .msh files directly, so much easier (well, for me anyway) then the xsi format, no doubt with some signature that the .msh was made in my app and was allowed to be edited, if it was not there then do not allow it to be modified.  That would be assuming I had more time though.
