My darn tilde key (~) isn't working.

Well, I'll be more precise. It's obviously working, as I can type it. I did so in the subject line of this thread. However, it DOES NOT work in BZII (I've tried in stock 1.2 and in FE). This means that I cannot:

  • Open the console.
  • Recycle any units.
  • Select specific units from a squad.

I have not experienced this on my old Win98 computer that is long since unplugged, nor on a relative's WinXP machine (nor on this same machine back when it had WinME on it). The key works normally in every other program. Please help!

What OS are you running? 1.3ta5's readme13.rtf (installed w/ the patch), links to http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_console_commands#Other_bugs , as BZ2 is not the only program hurt by keyboard-stealing apps.

I'm running Vista Home Premium (32 bit). The bug described there seems very likely the cause, and I'll test its advice and edit this post when the results are in.

EDIT: The key works now! Thank you so much! :-)

UPDATE: It works to open the console, which was what I tested. Since the console opened, I assumed that it works for the rest of the things. It doesn't. I can open the console, but I can't tell things to recycle and I can't select specific units from a squad.

Check out the end of Gameprefs.ini.  In order to change things, you have to copy entries to Localprefs.ini.

Ooh interesting. I managed to fix the ~ key problem with all versions of BZ2 on my vista laptop.

I tried using the guide found here

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_console_commands#Other_bugs

Which pointed out the faulty driver, but when I uninstalled the driver it would reinstall -- and give me no option to disable. Some digging through my google searches eventually led me to a more permanent fix

I do not know if new keys should be used on 1.3

I can't find it in my FE install folder or any subfolders. I was able to find it in a different install of BZII, but that hardly helps. :-(

The more permanent fix isn't working for me. It just keeps reinstalling the driver. I don't mind uninstalling it manually every time if that's what I need to do though. But as I said, this only fixes the console, it still doesn't let me recycle units or select individuals from a squad.

I didn't see any instructions. I downloaded the executable, which I then ran and installed to my Battlezone 2 folder, and it looks like it doesn't really address the problem.

Gameprefs.ini is used in 1.3.

Newkeys is an edited copy of bzgame_keys.cfg which is put into your addon folder and I use it for 1.3, too.

I'm still having trouble, so my inner geek has decided to be scientific about this. Here's what I've done so far:

I've installed plain old fresh-off-the-cd BZ2, and it doesn't let me recycle units or select individuals from a squad.

I've made a copy of the fresh-off-the-cd folder, and installed newkeys to the copy. Still no success.

I've made another copy of the fresh-off-the-cd folder, and will try installing some version of 1.3; should I go with Public Beta 4, Public Beta 3, or Tech Alpha 5? I'll also try the 1.3 with and without Newkeys.

Red Devil

If you're running XP or Vista (blech!), you can run TA5.  If not, PB4a.

I'm running Vista, and believe me, blech doesn't cover the half of it. I remember the good ol' days, when file systems didn't explicitly lie to you about where you were saving things... </offtopic>

As to the test, I'll start with TA5, since I've already downloaded its installer, and bigger numbers are fun.  :-D
